Cab Fever
Anyone who’s ever had an unpleasant ride in a taxi will appreciate cruising in Jon Barnes’ souped-up Checker-cab. Instead of rude remarks, riders in Barnes’ taxi hear the sound of Barnes’ voice, wailing the lyrics to popular songs as he plays his electronic saxophone and his portable keyboard. Customers also see a light show that rivals all others. And there are no shocking monetary surprises at the end of the ride: it always costs $25 for every 15 minutes. Jon Barnes’ Ultimate Taxi hold seven Yamaha synthesizers, an Alpine Ultimate Sound system, a six disc CD player, a fog machine, colored lights and the inevitable mirrored disco ball. Barnes, 32, has lived in Aspen, Colorado, for 12 years and has been driving a taxi since 1983. Since he started renovating his taxi, it’s turned into what Barnes describes as “a night club on wheels.” Customers seem to love it. From random riders to big shots like Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith, Barnes’ clients can’t get enough of the entertainment he offers. Customers get their pictures taken Barnes at stoplights , and are showered with glow-in-the-dark jewelry, and last but not least, at the end of the ride, have the opportunity to buy knickknacks form the souvenir shop Barnes houses in his trunk
